Confocal microscopes are vital for labs

Confocal microscopes use point illumination and an optically conjugate plate with a pinhole in front of the detector to eliminate the out-of-focus light from areas of the specimen not being observed.

 

This improves optical resolution greatly over wide-field microscopes and fluorescence microscopes, although it does decrease signal intensity and increase the need for long exposures. Continue reading
